Nostalgia Critic: "The Room"

There's a movie made by an unknown actor/director/writer/executive producer/producer (check the credits) named Tommy Wiseau that is considered one of the worst movies out there.  It's a little independent film he made based on his novel and screenplay called "The Room."  I have not seen it, but it is developing a cult following along the lines of "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

Well, last week the Nostalgia Critic (Doug Walker) gave a hilarious review of this film, even by the end of the review recommending it to people just so they could see how bad it is.  Before him, a newer reviewer going by the name Obscura Lupa had also done her own review of the film.

By this week, both reviews have been removed from the website.  Why?  Wiseau-Films made a copyright claim on the fact that they used footage from the film to make their point.

Well, at the moment Obscura Lupa's review is stil MIA, but the Nostalgia Critic's take is up at YouTube.








I'll talk a little more about this in the podcast this week, but just thought I would post this to give you guys a preview of at least one of the topics I'll be talking about this week.

With me being almost done with school, I'm going to try to get to these once a week.  In the meantime, check out the Glogster page in the sidebar and click on the little arrow on the picture to take a listen.  Suggestions are accepted.

You might have noticed the new little graphic on the side of the blog making fun of "Twilight."  Well, if you aren't familiar with it, it's from a site called Glogster.  This week I'm taking an institute with the Plymouth Writing Project on Writing Education and Multimedia, so this site was a place that I thought of for a unit plan I'm writing up for the Fall term as a final project for a unit.  I love it because I can post videos from other sites or upload my own, put sound on there, pictures, etc.

The little graphic on the side was just an example.  I may start using this site to post podcasts now that I have a decent microphone hooked up.  So watch the evolving space for details.

We All Have Them...

I usually don't get into my family life too much on here, but I just felt the need to get this off my chest.

I have this cousin that I have always had issues with since we were kids.  As a kid she was annoying and a bit of a troublemaker.  Now that she's a mom herself...she's worse.

Not that she's a bad mom -- she's a very good mother, actually.  Too good to the point that she feels the need to dictate to everyone else how to take care of their kids.  For instance, as a prime example of this, one Easter my husband (then my boyfriend) and I brought his two kids (6 and 9 at the time, with the 9 year old in the process of being diagnosed with ADHD so he wasn't on medication yet) to my grandparents' house.  Well, we had to leave earlier than I planned -- primarily because this particular cousin had to come over to Doug and I while we were talking with my father and uncle to let us know that my grandfather had gotten mad at my stepdaughter for pouring Sprinte in the driveway, and telling Doug not to let his kids run around like "wild animals."

Anyway, like I said in the previous post today I'm having back issues.  Before we came up with the solution of calling my stepson to come down to help me out since he was home from school, I dind't know what I was going to do -- I couldn't lift my son out of or into his crib, or even lift him in general.  I felt like I needed someone here with me to help me out since I really couldn't do much.  So I posted this status update on Facebook:

I am in SO much pain right now! My back is still hurting from yesterday and my feet are hurting. And Doug has to go in to work, so I can't get any help from him for the rest of the day after he goes in to work.

Well, along with a friend and my sister in law giving me some encouragement, my cousin decides to post something, as well.  I didn't save it because I found it counterproductive, but basically she felt the need to one-up me on ailments by listing everyone she has and adding "...and I have three kids to take care of!"

Like I said, I deleted them.  Then I promptly sent a message to my sister-in-law about how much I hate her sometimes.

I don't particularly like her as a person.  Stuff like this is the reason why.  If she weren't my cousin I would "unfriend" her because she feels the need to make her own little snide commentary if I'm having an "off" day.

And that's my vent for today.

By the Way...

The good news is that I might be blogging a little more today than usual.  The bad news is the reason for it -- I threw my back out when I went to pick up an old Yamaha keyboard that I've had since I was 15 so I could show my 22 month old son the noises it makes.  So right now I'm kind of stuck sitting in this chair because I can't bend over or do anything "big."

So today, you might see me either picking up on news stories that I find interesting,
contemplating whether Shakespeare really did write his own works (I've actually started reading him for fun -- I'm re-reading "Hamlet" right now), or looking for some interesting entertainment and general pop culture tidbits.

Hopefully I won't be in too much pain over the course of the day -- my stepson is here right now helping me out with my son and general lifting jobs.  But at least you will probably hear more from me today than usual.

"Let Me In" Trailer Released

For those who don't know, this is a remake of a Swedish film that came out in 2008 called "Let The Right One In," which is based on a book called "Let Me In." (You confused yet?)  The Swedish film got excellent reviews, so naturally Hollywood came calling.

If you don't recognize the actress right away, you might if you saw the recent film "Kick-Ass" -- that's Chloe Moretz, who plays "Hit Girl."

Funny For Today

At the moment I'm taking a class on Shakespeare, so I got a kick out of these. Comedy troupe Second City did a series of three videos online that ask the question: If some of Shakespeare's most tragic heroines had sassy gay friends, could their lives have been saved?

Helen Thomas Is Retiring Effective Immediately

I'm sure EVERYONE has been following this story since Drudge Report brought attention to it.

Helen Thomas has been a newspaper reporter for a very, VERY long time. She has been a White House Correspondent for just as long. In 2000, she retired from being a reporter, but still remained a columnist. So in honor of her time as a White House Correspondent, Thomas has been given a chair up front and center in the press room.

Well, it's known that Thomas was also very, very, very liberal. And in later years she made no bones about letting this be known. She also has expressed an opinion on one occasion or another about the Israel/Palestinian conflict (which prompted former press secretary Tony Snow, during the GWBush years, to jokingly tell Thomas during a briefing that she was expressing the "Hezbollah view").

Well, over the past few days, the following video has been floating around and gone viral. It was taken last month at a White House event.



Some of the right wing blogs, including Hot Air, didn't think anything would happen to Thomas because of this. She's 89, after all. Would this just god own as the ranting of an old woman who's been in the business way too long, or would she actually suffer some consequences?

Well, let's see:

-- She's been condemned by newspapers and programs all over the US.
-- Her former writing partner has said he won't work with her anymore.
-- A Maryland high school has asked her not to speak at their graduation.
-- Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has called her remarks "Offensive and reprehensible."
-- Her agency dumped her.

And soon after Gibbs' remarks -- Thomas has announced her "retirement" effective immediately.

Hey, what do you know? Actions DO have consequences!

Dead at the age of 42.

He had a lot of problems after his show Diff'rent Strokes went off the air, although he seemed to fair better than his fellow child co-stars.  Hopefully he's now at peace.

What the Hell Is Going On In Manchester?

Are the kids at Hillside THAT bad?

This makes the third teacher from Hillside that has had issues with drugs or alcohol in the past few months.  The district almost didn't want to say anything until they found out the cops publicized the arrest.

Most of my past field experience has been with middle schoolers.  My stepdaughter is a middle schooler.  They can be difficult at times.  But this is just bad.  I could understand if it was spread out over schools, but three in one school?

Where is the oversight?

Breaking: Explosion at Plant in Colebrook

A plant in Colebrook that makes muzzleloading guns has experienced a series of explosions, killing two people.
