"Reaper" Recap: "The Devil and Sam Oliver"

Sam figures out finally what he needs to get into a competition with The Devil. But it ends up costing the soul of someone close to him in the process.

Rating: A

This week (which may be the final week on The CW since they are planning on getting rid of their Sunday night lineup -- talk right now is that new shows will be produced in syndication), we end the season on an interesting note.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

With the help of angel Steve (Michael Ian Black), Sam is finally able to get the translation of the note that his father sent him from Hell -- it's an incantation to bring the Devil (Ray Wise) to him and force him into a competition. After some thinking, Sam finally figures out that he can only possibly beat the Devil at one thing -- Quarters. When Sam ties against the Devil, thereby "losing" to him, Andi offers up her own soul in exchange for a rematch. But during the second match, Steve breaks Sam's hand so that he would lose, on orders from "higher up."

In the meantime, Ben's grandmother comes for a visit to tell him that he's disowned from the family unless his demon girlfriend Nina goes for an exorcism. He refuses at first, but Nina agrees to it in order to keep Ben's family together.

Overall, it was a good episode. You have the usual escaped soul (a drug dealer who can turn his face into that of a frog), we have the Nina and Ben subplot (they just look so cute together!), Sock's usual antics (on his way to help Ben save Nina, he accidentally drinks a soda that had a poisoned toad in it, causing him to act possessed), the Sam/Andi dilemma (now that both their souls are sold to the Devil, will this improve their relationship?), and some great performances all around. I can't wait for it to return (if it does).
