Horror Fan News: New Jason Revealed

Bloody-Disgusting.com is reporting that the actor who will be playing Jason in the remake of "Friday the 13th" has been revealed.

Bloody-Disgusting has the scoop! This morning we received exclusive intel - which has been confirmed - that Derek Mears (The Hills Have Eyes 2, Cursed) is in final talks to play Jason Voorhees in the remake of Friday the 13th for Platinum Dunes, New Line Cinema, MTV and Paramount Pictures. We have also been informed that he is in fact going to be the new Jason, it's just a matter of time until everything is finalized. FRIDAY THE 13th is set to hit theaters everywhere on February 13, 2009. Marcus Nispel is set to direct from a screenplay by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Jared Padalecki will play one of the teens. Remember you read it at Bloody-Disgusting.com first!

He has the right look for the part, and he's acted in a horror remake before. So we'll see how he does with this.

I do have to say, which may surprise you folks, that I have a certain odd fondness for the "Friday the 13th" movies. I didn't get to watch them as a kid (the no rated R movies rule that was in my house until I was 18), but my stepdaughter got me the boxed set of the first 8 films in the series as a birthday gift recently (I thought my husband had a hand in the actual selection, but no -- she asked him if I liked horror movies, and he told her I did. And that happened to be the one that she picked out for me). When I was getting into horror movies I was more a Freddy girl than Jason, but I still have the fondness for the series.

Not because they were any good, mind you, but were watchable in that kind of "Plan 9 From Outer Space" kind of way. Actually, I take that back -- the first one was watchable in that "peer through your fingers" way you would watch really scary horror movies. After that, they just got stupider.

But if they are remaking the first movie, they must be taking it in a different direction than the first one did. In the first film, Jason was not the killer, but a victim himself. His mother was the killer to avenge his death, but was killed by the "last girl." He became the killer in Part 2 to avenge his mother's death.

One of these days I'm going to write a whole entry on the whole idea of the "final girl" concept in horror movies after "Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

Anyway, I digress. There's your news -- a new Jason has been cast yet again. And hopefully he doesn't screw it up.
